The Challenge
The pace of change in today's aviation market results in ever increasing pressure on airports to accommodate new products and requirements. This is accentuated by the great number of separate organisations who constitute an airport’s clients.
Developments over recent years have included some of the following:
- Airline product expansion has demanded enhanced facilities for premium passengers, such as provision of lounges and fast track facilities.
- More recently the demand has been for cost efficient passenger handling systems as the low cost carriers have increased their impact.
- Security has taken on a renewed emphasis, especially since 9/11, and new technologies and procedures have to be located in critical areas.
- New immigration arrangements resulting from EU expansion, partial implementation of the Schengen agreement, etc, have led to basic redesign of some passenger flow schemes.
All these changes have to be housed within the airport building, which in the short term at least, has only a finite amount of space available.
Airport planning consequently poses a major challenge because of the lengthy time scales involved. Where as planning horizons for the main customer – i.e. the airline – may often be measured in months, the scale and nature of infrastructure investment means that the airport planner work with a horizon as long as 25 years.
Consequently, ensuring terminal building design incorporates the maximum of flexibility in both the short and medium term is one of the most difficult and challenging tasks.
